Freddie James

From teenage sensation to timeless stage legend.

An explosive live performer whose career spans international disco success, soul, Motown, R&B, theatre, film and decades of unforgettable entertainment.

A teenage disco phenomenon who became one of Montreal’s most enduring entertainers.

Born in Chicago and raised in Montreal, Freddie James grew up surrounded by music as the son of acclaimed singer, songwriter and producer Geraldine Hunt. At only fourteen years old, he broke internationally with the irresistible 1979 anthem (Everybody) Get Up and Boogie, establishing himself as one of Canada’s remarkable young disco voices.

The success brought two 1980 JUNO Award nominations—Single of the Year and Most Promising Male Vocalist—and a Canadian Black Music Award for Best Album. Freddie continued recording through the 1980s and 1990s, expanding his sound from disco and funk into soul, R&B and contemporary dance music.

His career has also crossed into musical theatre, film, production and comedy. Today, he remains a magnetic live performer at the front of the Freddie James Project, delivering high-energy celebrations of Soul, Motown, Disco, R&B and Pop with the humour, warmth and stage command of a true veteran entertainer.
